Soul Cap

You may have already heard about Soul Cap. They are a big deal and have been making some big waves and strides for Diversity and Inclusion in sports. If you haven’t heard of them yet, you will, and who can blame you for taking a news break from this racist world where you can’t even swim competitively in peace.

Soul Cap has brought the first swimming cap designed with Black folks and our hair in mind to the market. After much controversy, and yes, our hair is still a thing, FINA has officially approved our hair, I mean a cap for our hair. Black athletes and those with full-bodied and long hair can finally wear something that fits their hair type and texture.

I swim almost daily and haven’t bothered with a swimming cap for years as they never quite fit right. I’ve put up with the chlorine, which is so bad for our hair, rather than a cap that didn’t fit properly and always slid off. I’ve said this before, and I need to say it to myself also - If you can’t find what you want, then you need to create it, and so they did.

After returning my first Soul Cap order, as my hair isn’t as voluminous as I thought it was, I’ve finally received my new pink cap, and it fits. They also have a full range of colours and have more than just swimming caps. The range is expanding with all things swim - goggles, swimwear, training aids and more. My next order will be for the swimsuit so I can be all Soul Capped out.

They may have cornered a very obvious niche in the market, but that the place existed is part of a problem which now Soul Cap should no doubt dominate in taking over the current space, market share and revenue.

How can it fail as it serves an underserved demographic and is inclusive for people of all hair types? Well, the only way it can is if it doesn’t have the consumer support it needs to grow, and it looks like it has, with other giant corporations getting behind them too. Hello, Soul Cap x Adidas.

Sadly, this is the first, but I'm glad it now exists. I’ve sent it to my What’s App groups so that no one has an excuse not to learn how to swim. It still shocks me how many people can’t swim when our planet is made of mostly water. I know some people have a fear of water which is all the more reason why the rest of us need to learn how to swim. I’m just out here trying to save lives and do my part to spread the word.

Much success to Soul Cap. One size does not fit all, and there are new brands on the block, and the disruption will continue & continue until we get it right.

It’s time for a new global inclusive swimwear brand. Get ready for the waves.
